Jerry Blogger Blowback Makes Stockton Record

And I am quoted… Hank Shaw’s lede is that Bay Area activists got Jerry elected and are now frustraited by his remarks on Iraq. That is true, however, let me point out that the two bloggers he quoted are not from the Bay. I am in Sacto and Howie is in LA.

This faint praise for President Bush’s “surge” sent the activists into orbit. Hundreds of blog posts began pouring into cyberspace crying betrayal. Hundreds more postings emerged after House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, cited McNerney as among the Democrats who supposedly supported the surge. (Boehner’s spokesman is Brian Kennedy, who worked for Pombo last year.)

“Oh Jerry McNerney. What is to be done with you?” blogger Julia Rosen wrote on Calitics. “Frankly, I am saddened about this whole thing. It has been clear that all of our work to create communications channels about your Iraq positioning was for naught.”

Blogger Howie Klein at Firedoglake said he’s become “exasperated” with McNerney.

“Jerry was the one who wanted to end the occupation of Iraq,” Klein wrote. “I don’t really have any doubt that he still does. But he’s given lots of other people plenty of reasons to wonder, including many of his earliest and most devoted backers.”

An anti-war group is planning to picket McNerney’s Stockton office next week, reading out the names of the dead.

This particular article may serve to further depress McNerney’s activist base, but it may help him out in the district. While the majority of the district is in favor of withdrawal, I have a hard time believing that they would get upset over any praise of Bush or talk of cooperation with the Republicans. The article ends pretty stongly for him.

McNerney said maybe he could have telegraphed his position to his electronic supporters beforehand, but he said it’s not his job to be dogmatic.

“I’m a scientist, a problem solver,” said McNerney, who was a wind-energy engineer and a mathematician before winning his seat in Congress. “I want to use all the evidence I have at hand to make my decision.

“It’d be a lot easier for me to go with, ‘Let’s get out in three months,’ but that’s not going to fly,” he said. “All Americans want the same thing. It’s how we get there.”

  1. Rosen, you are the worst of the worst. McNerney is doing a great job in his district, but that means nothing to an out of district activist blogger like you. You only have YOUR agenda in mind and don’t care one bit about the interest of the people that live in the 11th district. If McNerney doesn’t follow your agenda 100% of the time, you resort to bashing one of the nice guys in politics. Remember, McNerney’s job is to serve his constituents, not be a mindless “progressive” robot that you desire. Would you want a right-wing nut representing the 11th district instead of McNerney? If you do, perhaps you should continue bashing him and being completely uncompromising. I hope you’re happy getting press in the Stockton Record due to your big mouth and lack of loyalty. Truly disgusting.

  2. Fuck Rosen, Fuck Howie, Fuck Progressive Bloggers, McNereney’s Cool, Fuck Rednecks, I’m Out

    Long live McNerney Nation

  3. Rosen: “While the majority of the district is in favor of withdrawal, I have a hard time believing that they would get upset over any praise of Bush or talk of cooperation with the Republicans”

Oh, sounds like you know nothing about the district. The district is more than just rednecks from SJ County. Ever heard of the Tri-Valley in the East Bay? People in that area are not in love with Bush as you would suggest. These are affluent and educated people. Simply look at the demographics and you will realize that the Tri-Valley should not be taken lightly. Please refrain from blanket statements about the district.

  5. Let me first point out that all three comments are from the same person who is acting as a classic troll. I also want to note that I have worked very hard to create a very respectful dialogue with McNerney and his staff. That has been very important to me and thus far I believe I have succeeded. The fact that others want to insult and swear at me speaks for itself.

That said, I do want to address the subject of “carter”’s comment. The point I was trying to make and perhaps I did not succeed was more nuanced than that. The position of the blogosphere of Democratic unity bashing the Republicans into submission and hatred of Bush is not one most of America shares. Many Americans, while they want to see to see America withdraw from Iraq are not dogmatic about it like the blogosphere. The same is true about the role of bipartinism to end the war. That needs to happen, our dispute with McNerney is when and how that occurrs.

I was attempting to say that the blogosphere is often portrayed as the fringe on the left and McNerney’s comments sound very reasonable. The exact subject of this conflict may engage those activists deeply imbedded in the fight to end the war, but appear much a do about nothing to most voters. Therefor, while this particular story may depress the activists, it may be neutral at worse or helpful for McNerney when it comes to the many moderates in the district as he does battle with the “crazy bloggers”.

  6. Don’t get me wrong, the Daily Kos and The Huffington Post are great blogs and America benefits from having them. It is blogs like The Progressive Connection and Firedoglake that are the problem. It is all or nothing with them. Black and white, like the thinking of a redneck conservative in Alabama. If McNerney doesn’t completely adhere to the progressives’ every demand, they make him walk the plank. Blinded by their own self-interests, progressives attack him like sharks. Can you progressives give the brother a break?! Can you take some time to understand the realities of his district? Can you take the time to understand his circumstances? Can you appreciate the fact that he chatted with the progressive bloggers for a couple hours, unlike 100% of the politicians in American? Do you know what the alternative to McNerney will be? Lets get back down to earth people.

  7. Yeah, I know you are from Sacramento and Howie is from Los Angeles. An odd conundrum of covering the Blogosphere is that, as a member of the MSM, I almost *never* quote anonymous sources (some of my colleagues do, but I don’t, for the most part) And most of the bloggers who *are* in the Bay Area go by pseudonyms, such as Babaloo. I asked for his real name, but he declined. So I chose not to quote him. Puts me in a bind, because many of the anon bloggers are saying interesting things…

    Hank
